Fit, Leather & Shoe Care
Good moccasins like ours will adapt to your feet in the first weeks of wear, and then fit like gloves. We recommend buying them fitting close to the end of your toes because they will give a little. As a guide, the seam around the front should cradle your toes. Our lasts are elegant, and slightly long, so if you vary in size depending on brand, choose the smaller size you usually take.
Width Our lasts are a little wider than average, not slim or wide fitting. The moccasin construction and the soft leathers we use give good width tolerance.
Leathers, Linings & soles
Suede The layer of the hide just below the top surface. Sliced off after tanning, then brushed to form an attractive nap, it’s used for informal colourful shoes like ours. We use Italian suede made in small tanneries making some of the best leathers in the world.
Calf The top surface of the hide, which is waxed and finished to bring out the character. A durable and shiny finish for a casual look.
Nubuck The top layer of the hide, sanded and buffed after tanning to give a smooth velvety surface. It’s used for shoes with a smarter casual look. We use Italian nubuck from Santa Croce, near Florence, a renowned centre for good tanneries.
Linings There are lots of unlined moccasins around, cheaper, but nowhere near as good as shoes like ours which are always fully leather lined. Apart from being more comfortable, linings restrain the stretch that occurs as shoes are worn, so no more floppy shoes that hang off the feet.
Soles The soles for our shoes are pure rubber. Made from the latex extracted from rubber trees, they are flexible and hard wearing, and stitched to the upper for flexibility. Our driving sole has a sweep up the back to protect the heel when driving. It looks good too.
Customers say they love our shoes, but often do not treat them as well as they should. Shoes look better and last longer if they are cared for. If made in suede or nubuck they benefit from a protective spray before wear. They should be cleaned with a rubber brush, or washed gently with a damp cloth or nail brush. Calf leather shoes can be wiped with a damp cloth, and waxed. They should be stored on proper shoe trees, or stuffed with paper. Our new silver printed suede can be wiped with a damp cloth.
